Petlans

🏆 Project Highlights

Petlants is a plant-rearing simulation game designed for plant lovers who lack gardening experience. It provides a stress-free way to enjoy gardening while integrating plant science and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), transforming learning into an engaging journey rather than a chore.

🚀 Project Vision

  • Make SDG 13 (Climate Action) accessible and engaging.

  • Raise awareness regarding the environmental value and ecological importance of plants.

🧗 Challenges

  • International Collaboration: Working across different cultures and professional backgrounds.

  • English-Only Environment: All communication and project deliverables were executed in English.

  • Gamifying Education: Presenting SDG 13 in a way that is both "fun" and "memorable."

🔍 Situation

Petlants originated as an SDGs project at VIA University College in Denmark. As a diverse team, we had to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers. Our direction was established through comprehensive research:

  • Qualitative: Interviews with Danish students, international students, and faculty.

  • Quantitative: Surveys conducted across Taiwan, Ukraine, Belgium, and Germany.

  • Key Finding: Most respondents felt "SDG 13: Climate Action" was the least relevant to their daily lives. Thus, we chose it as our core focus.

📝 Task

Following our research, the team brainstormed 5–10 ideas each, filtered by Feasibility, Interest, and SDG Relevance. We decided on a simulation game to naturally bridge the gap between users and environmental issues.

  • Primary Goals: Ensure SDG 13 is understood through play and enhance user appreciation for plant life.

⚡ Action

I spearheaded the design execution through the following phases:

  1. Requirements Gathering: Discussing user scenarios with the team.

  2. Architecture: Creating a Sitemap to define the product structure.

  3. Wireframing: Establishing Information Architecture and user flows.

  4. Prototyping: Developing high-fidelity Mockups and Prototypes. My focus was on leading the UI/UX design to ensure a consistent visual style and seamless user experience.

🌱 Reflection

Petlants was my first international project, collaborating with peers from Taiwan, Belgium, Ukraine, and Germany. The greatest challenge was conducting interviews, team syncs, and final presentations entirely in English.

Through this experience, I gained:

👉 Cross-Cultural Communication: Aligning different perspectives toward a shared goal.

👉 Adaptability: Delivering results in unfamiliar and high-pressure environments.

👉 Continuous Iteration: Valuing the process of making mistakes and refining solutions.

Petlants was more than just a design project; it was a pivotal step out of my comfort zone.
